Top tips to save money on your power bill

Power bills have dramatically increased in the last few years, placing significant financial pressure on many households. Given the current cost-of-living crisis, people are trying to save money in any way they can. Here are some ways to reduce your power bill as we approach the warmer weather.

Avoid setting your air conditioner too cool

The harder your air conditioner has to work, the more energy it will consume. Therefore, the lower the temperature you set your air conditioner to, the higher your electricity bill will be. Setting your air conditioner to 24 degrees Celsius is considered the optimum temperature. Turn your air conditioner off when you go to bed or leave the house to reduce power consumption. When using your air conditioner, block rooms or spaces that don’t need temperature control.

Install a shade sail

By shading the side of your property, a shade sail can lower the temperature inside your home by stopping direct sunlight from hitting your windows. Therefore, there is less need for you to keep your air conditioner running during summer. For maximum benefit, you should consider a high-quality custom-made product. While these products may cost more, they will be more durable and last longer representing better value for money in the long term.

Use energy saving LED light globes

Switching to energy-saving LED light globes can significantly reduce your lighting costs, potentially saving you up to 80% on your electricity bill. These globes not only use less power but also have a longer lifespan, providing a more cost-effective lighting solution for your home.

Close gaps and cracks around house

Energy Australia estimates households can save up to 25 per cent on their electricity bill simply by stopping air leaking through gaps and cracks.

Remove air leaks under and around doors, windows, ceilings, and skirting boards. For example, you can use a ‘door snake’, which is a draft stopper that you can place under your door to prevent drafts from entering the room.

Use fans

While fans don’t actually lower the temperature of a room, they do a great job of circulating the air, improving comfort levels by about three degrees. Plus, they use less energy than running an air conditioner, making them a more energy-efficient cooling option. Just remember to turn off the fan when you leave the room to save even more energy.

Shut up your house during hottest hours

Open your windows at night to let the cool air in, then close them first thing in the morning to trap that cool air in.
Closing curtains and blocking out heat can save your household $50 a year.

Consider Solar Energy

Solar energy will reduce the amount of power you need to purchase from the grid.

Get the best possible deal

One of the most effective ways to reduce your power bill is to ensure you’re on the cheapest possible electricity deal for your needs. Many state governments offer free comparison websites that can help you find the best deal, giving you more control over your energy costs.

Use plants to shade your home

By positioning climbing plants or small trees outside your home, you can block the sun before it heats windows or external walls.

Avoid using dryers

Dryers use a lot of energy; therefore, using them regularly can increase your power bills. Try to hang your clothes outside to dry them wherever possible.

Consider installing insulation

Insulation can reduce your heating and cooling bills by up to 20 per cent. If you already have insulation, make sure it is working properly. If your home is getting excessively hot, has trouble maintaining its temperature, or your power bills have increased, chances are your insulation is not working as effectively as possible. In this instance, you should seek the assistance of a professional.

Follow these tips, and you will ensure your power bill isn’t any higher than it needs to be.
